Keep it Steady
This is a tough one. I'd want to see the spores under a microscope and have a a few of them measured.
You might want to do the microscopy of this collection (i.e. spores, cystidia) and share it with students at MushroomObserver.
Someone who studies Gymnopilus species should be consulted to add additional comments.
Compare to the genus "Psathyrella" at MushroomObserver.
Could be Leucoagaricus. Check the gill color and try to include pics of the underside and other specimens of the same species.
Please try to add a pic of the underside (gills) and additional features of the mushroom whenever it's possible.
Try comparing to other Gymnopilus species in your area: http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/obs...
Can you compare to Fomitopsis officinalis (synonymous with Laricifomes officinalis and Agarikon):http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/obs...If so, it is an important find: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-stame...
Looks like a Gymnopilus species: http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/obs...
