We have been using an ordinary, white bedsheet strapped up between two trees or two poles places in the ground. Then we have a mercury light and a blacklight shining on the sheet and the moths just come flying, so to speak. In my experience of doing this 3 summers in Ontario, the luna's fly in june-july and come out earlier on in the night. I would check moth lights from sunset till sunrise, and the luna's were always the one first out by the lights. Hope it helps. :)
I feel very lucky to be able to see these awesome creatures. I'm doing field research with moths and bats for the 3rd summer in a row in Ontario, Canada, so it is a perfect setting to spot amazing moths and other cool nocturnal animals.
