A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
This marten was in an area called the Sax Zim Bog. I don't think it's technically a bog but it is an area filled with spruce and tamarack trees. There is a lot of wildlife in this habitat. The specific place where this was taken had some makeshift bird feeders set up and there was some seed and suet on the ground. I suspect the marten was coming there to eat some of the suet that had fallen on the ground. At the time I was photographing this individual, there was another one just a few meters away that others were photographing.
Thank you, Spenser. I looked up some Tussock Moth caterpillars and I am thinking perhaps it's a Banded Tussock Moth (Halysidota tessellaris).
Thank you. It's perhaps my favorite bird. They can be hard to find but this one was easy.
Actually, no. I wasn't in a blind. But it was terribly foggy and the bird ran right in front of me and up a small embankment before disappearing.
Thanks, Alice.
Helena, that is a pretty good description.
