It is an eastern mud turtle! We used the herpsofnc.org website to match the plastron.

Yes, it was found by kinder student where I teach. We talked about how a turtle has a small home range and if removed will try to walk back, often getting hit by cars. We then put it back where it was found (a little farther away from the playground)!

This turtle had been hit by car. We had seen other snapping turtles along this road before and they were very chippy!
