Ficus malayana
A common montane species of earth fig. About 5m tall tree. Fig fruits are growing on a long dropping stalk that reaches for the ground. Has a sweet smell when opened.
The tree is growing on a slope in a secondary forest in the mountains.
Earth figs are unique as their fruits usually grow low on the ground to be eaten by ground animals. This species is split from F. uncinata, another native earth fig species which is more hairy. There are 10 Earth Fig species in Borneo out of the over 150 native fig species.

Thanks! This is an unusual fruit indeed. Many of these figs are edible to humans but we have lost our traditional knowledge on how to eat them.
