The University of New England hosts a group of graduate students that work under the National Science Foundation's GK-12 program (http://www.gk12.org/). At UNE, this group is called SPARTACUS (A Systemic PARTnership Aimed at Connecting University and School) and the students are each paired with a local K-12 teacher. The students and teachers then work together to help students better understand and appreciate science as well as their local environment. This project promotes place-based education, and allowing students to connect to the various wildlife in "their own backyard".
This mission aims to expand the reach of the SPARTACUS program, by allowing students from any school (at any grade level) in Maine to participate. We are hoping to catalog any and all wildlife in your area. This will allow students to get a better understanding of not only the wildlife where they live, but how it differs across the state of Maine as well. This can also be used to keep a record of how wildlife changes over a number of years on your school-grounds.
If you are interested in learning more about the SPARTACUS program, or the lessons that we give in the classroom, please visit our wiki site (https://sites.google.com/a/une.edu/spartacus-nsf-gk-12-home/)
