Merritt Island is formerly an island but with the construction of the Crawlerway in the north (for NASA space vehicles to move to the launch pad over Banana Creek) Merritt Island became connected to the mainland peninsula. Merritt Island is home to a variey of migratory birds, alligators, manatess, dophins, ospreys and an occasional Florida Panther.
