Over the past 2 Years, Chris Bech and Steve Rice have assisted and sponsored the Ferrol Turtle Sanctuary on Tablas Island, Chris has now made a nipa education hut, to help educate locals and visitors to the Importance of protecting Turtle Eggs and Baby Turtles.
Since 2010 Chris has successfully assisted in protecting 8,000+ Turtle eggs which after hatching we keep the baby turtles in nets supported by bamboo, to keep the safe from predators. until they are 4 months old, then we release the Turtles into the wild. Turtle success rate from being born to joining there habitat in the ocean is 1%, since we take care of them till they are 4 months old, the success rate has been raised to 10%
Ferrol seems to have a very productive beach for the Mother Turtles to come back some 20 to 30 Years later to the beach they were born and lay their own Turtle Eggs. Until the project was started 2 years ago, the locals and predators eat the turtle eggs for food, greatly reducing the turtle population, and future baby turtles in Ferrol.
We are now currently making a couple of web sites to help to raise awareness of the endangered turtles and their protection in Romblon Province in the Philippines. Due to lack of governments funding, Education, the Turtles have in the past just been ignored with their needs and assistance for survival.
