In Assam 187 freshwater fishes have been reported in Assam according to Sen-1985. Some of the fishes are restricted in the eastern or western part of the river Brahmaputra which is the main river in the state. The survey was done from April 2010 to March 2011. Migration may occur annually for spawning or feeding , so during 12 months there is highest possibilities of passing of the fishes through the survey areas. Fishes found in in paddy field, drainage system are very common and quite native. A number of fishes have decreased alarmingly and some fishes which were abundant just a few years ago are now not found because they may have become rare or extinct. So this survey is undertaken to estimate the fishes present now nearby Jorhat ( or in Jorhat district as a small representative of upper Assam)
