Anas Platyrhynchos
Mallard ducks are about 20-28 inches in length. They have a wingspan of about three feet. Both male and female have a blue stripe on the top center of their wings. The male has a green neck with a white band just below. The females are a speckled brown color. The species has an orange bill.
Mallard ducks live in lakes, swamps, rivers, and marshes, ponds, and streams. They live throughout Canada and the United States .
Mallards eat mostly plants, as well as insects, and crustaceans. The mallard duck is the ancestor of most domestic duck species. I took this picture of a litter of babies a mother duck had on the property. They were awesome to see and the mother did a great job with them. Everyone truly loved having this take place here.
