Sandhill Cranes

Grus canadensis

Description:

This was one of the most amazing days of my life. This was taken behind my friends home in Burlington, Wi. There is a marsh area behind my friends home. We were sitting outside, having our morning coffee. They come right up to the feeders. AMAZING! This pair returns every year spring to nest, unfortunately, the coyotes live in he area too. This pair had two little ones and one didn't make it.

The friends who have the joy of watching these cranes every morning, said that the babys got so curious that one of them fell into a basement window well and they had to jump in to rescue it. The mother crane was standing VERY CLOSE by watching. She could have easily hurt my friend but the mother knew that my friend was just trying to help. Animals are amazing that way. My friend said he had never felt anything so soft!

Cool! That would definitely make for an amazing day. I don't normally realize how big cranes are, because I only ever see them at a distance. Too bad about the coyote. Sometimes nature is so sad.
