Southern Right Whale

Eubalaena australis

Description:

The southern right whales start to migrate north for breeding in June and could be spotted close to the shore of South Africa in July. They stay in the area up until November and then move back to Antarctica. They are easily identified with the white callosities on their head. This one was spotted during a boat trip. It came really close to us, watching the boat and diving around it.

Habitat:

Southern oceans.

Notes:

The southern right whale, listed as "endangered" by CITES and is protected by all countries with known breeding populations (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and Uruguay).
