A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Stenopelmatus sp.
Donna, it got the name "potato bug" because it is an underground root feeder. Most people never encounter them because they usually only come above ground at night. Gardeners sometimes unearth them when turning soil. Once in a while they end up in people's homes. People I've talked to who have found them are always convinced they've discovered a new species of insect because they'd never seen anything like them before.
It's got to be Stenopelmatus fuscus, it's the only species in northern California. The other CA species are all down in the L.A. basin.
