Pinacate beetle

Description:

This beetle is a tenebrionid, not a carabid. Eleodes is a well-known genus in Tenebrionidae. In the US we sometimes call them "stink beetles" because of their smelly defensive spray. They are scavenger feeders, not predators.

Habitat:

In a semidesert area.

Notes:

I found it walking just half an hour after sun rise. The name pinacate is Mexican Spanish, derived from the Nahuatl (Aztec) name for the insect, pinacatl, which translates as "black beetle". Genus: Eleodes
