Sri Lanka Blue Magpie

Urocissa ornata

Description:

Endemic and very active and noisy bird. Very easy to spot in the thick forest with their complex singing patterns and some times harsh and powerful rasping sounds. This magpies was seen with a group of 10-12 other magpies including juveniles. It hops from branch to branch looking for food. Many were found praying on the Acavus sp. ( Endemic Land Snails )

Habitat:

Sinharaja Rain Forest

Notes:

We observed a remarkable behavior of parents training the juveniles to fly long distances by carrying the food and flying away , juveniles begged for food and finally flew a long way to the parents.
