Picoides pubescens
Black and white wings with a small red marking on its head. Straight, chisel-like bill, blocky head, wide shoulders, and straight posture as it leaned away from the tree and on its tail feathers.
This seems to be the smaller species that is common around here. They look a lot a like and one needs to pay close attention to notice the slight differences.
