Camissonia californica
Yellow flower about 3 cm across with red spots and center. There was only this one stalk about 30 cm tall with very narrow and short leaves that run up the length. I didn't see any base leaves. There are buds on the top. Last image shows the back of the flower. "Eulobus californicus is an annual herb which produces a basal rosette of leaves and then bolts a slender, erect stem which can exceed 1.5 meters in height. The larger leaves are located in the ground-level rosette; those on the stem are small and thready. The upper stem is an inflorescence bearing widely spaced flowers on long pedicels. Each flower is a cup of four bright yellow petals, sometimes with red speckles near the bases. Behind the flowers are four smaller sepals, which are greenish and reflexed back against the pedicel. The fruit is a cylindrical capsule 4 to 10 centimeters long." - Wikipedia
Grassy area and next to an unknown plant in riparian area. This is native to California. "It grows in scrub, chaparral, and desert plant communities." - Wikipedia

Oh yes that's a good point, here is the greater celandine, native to Europe but looks strangely similar to this evening primrose! http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/109... I hope you find lots of lovely flowers, Ashish! Since spring started here, wildflowers have popped up everywhere :)
Hi Laura..I am expecting spotting from you of those you saw similar to these flowers. Tell me if you spotted them already.
I am waiting for monsoon what is expected in 25-30 days time from today. I hope more herbs spotted with their lovely flowers with my new camera.
I'm glad Ashish got the right ID here! It really is odd how similar they look, one of those examples of analogous evolution I guess!
Cindy your pictures are so clear so I can easily find them with count of petals of yellow flower.
Thank you all for your suggestions! Ashish, you got it :)
Emma, I hope to find a Wind Poppy someday. They're apparently in this county too.
Laura, apparently we don't have that genus here in this county. It is amazing how similar some plants look!
This is North American plant...

Cindy, I just ID'd a picture I took yesterday of a really similar plant, the greater celandine. It doesn't fit exactly, but it is very similar... it's a Europe native, but has been introduced to N America, but what I'm thinking is it might be in the same family? Not sure if it will help entirely, but the resemblance is uncanny! Looks pretty much the same, just without the red markings in the centre. Gorgeous photos, by the way
Cindy,any similarity?

I subscribe to a link for our native plants and they send me a picture of a wind poppy today. Picture is similar except that the center has a lot more burgundy in it..
Ugh, sorry I forgot to mention the size. The entire plant was about 30 cm tall and the flower about 3 cm across.
flower is lovely. Was it the size of a scarlet pimpernal?
Hi Emma, I'm not familiar with that one. This makes me think of a Primrose but I haven't been able to find one that looks like this.
wind poppy?
