Chortophaga viridifasciata viridifasciata
I usually find grasshoppers hard to photograph as they take flight whenever I get close enough for macro. This guy was an exception to the rule - He was hanging out on a stem & I was trying to gently move a blade of grass out of the way so I could get a clear shot when he hopped onto my hand. After checking me out for a few seconds, he proceeded to start chomping away at my fingers - hard! He showed no signs of wanting to leave & I had quite a job to encourage him to release his grip on my fingers! It made for some funny macros though!
Wonderful grasshopper Karen! I'm pretty sure this is Chortophaga viridifasciata, and the Northern subspecies, viridifasciata.
Hehe it certainly is Sergio! I'm guessing he was after the salts on my skin but he wasn't gentle at all!
Wow, a carnivore grasshopper!!! Tennessee must be a very dangerous place to live at!!!
