Coprinus comatus
Tall grey capped mushroom with shaggy hair appearance. Gills are an intense black and produce black staining spores.
Suburban roadside. I noticed these three conspicuous specimens while driving and pulled over to shoot them.
Ink Caps have a very unusual method of dispersing spores. The fungus digests itself, secreting an enzyme that breaks down its own cells. This is called autodigestion (or deliquescence).
