Luna Moth

Actias luna

Description:

By and far my favorite saturniid moth. This is a female, based on the way the tail splits instead of overlapping the abdomen. They're such beautiful, high color moths with interesting patterns it's a shame that the adult stage only lasts for mating. As Saturniid moths or silk moths they have no mouth parts to eat. I'd also assume this is a first generation luna moth (they have two generations a year) as this one flew into my life in May.

Habitat:

Found throughout the US into Northern Mexico and even into Canada around Saskatchewan all the way to Nova Scotia. So quite the range for these beautiful little guys.
