Latticed Stinkhorn

Clathrus ruber

Description:

I found this mushroom under the Red Wood trees. It was attracting a lot of flies. The color of the fruit body, which can range from pink to orange to red, results primarily from the carotenoid pigments lycopene and beta-carotene. The gleba has a fetid odor, somewhat like rotting meat, which attracts flies and other insects to help disperse its spores.

I like it, Emma! (in spite of the flies and the smell) Here's a close cousin:

I didn't mean to disparage your fungus! It just didn't look so lovely to me; I'm sure the fungus fans will love it! :>)
