Carpenter Bee

Amegilla atrocinta

Description:

Carpenter bee sleeping on the lavender patch in my garden. They clamp their pincers around something at night and spend the night like that. What a bargain to get one of these little busy fellas sitting still for a photo shoot.

Excellent macros, and what a wonderful species. Thank you for sharing all of the information about them as well!

It is now pitch dark outside and I went to check on the bee. It was still there, with all legs nicely tucked up tight against its body. When the torch shone it too long, it raised all legs like in the first photo. Seems like it is a defensive posture once it decided to roost for the night.
