I concur. This looks like the seed ball of a Sweet Gum.

Looks like a dried seed pod from a Liquidambar tree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidambar... There are a few different species, but Liquidambar styraciflua is native to North America. Would need photos of the tree and leaves to be sure, but this is my guess.
