Today's etymology lesson in scientific nomenclature is brought to you by the Virginia Herpetological Society: "Plestiodon is derived from the Greek eu meaning 'good' and mekos meaning 'length,' referring to the long tail of the skink; laticeps is derived from the Latin word latus meaning 'broad' and Latin suffix ceps meaning 'head.'"
