Kumu Lā‘au Kalikimaka/Noble Fir

Abies procera

Description:

Description: Abies procera is a large evergreen tree that can grow very tall, at 130-230 ft. and 6.5 ft. in diameter. The bark of newer Abies procera is smooth and gray with resin blisters, eventually becoming a red-brown color. The old trees are rough and fissured. The leaves are needle-likes, and average 1-3.5 cm long, arranged spirally on the shoot, but are slightly twisted and upcurved above the shoot. The Abies procera is closely related to the red fir, which is best distinguished by the leaves having a groove along the midrib on the upper side; red fir does not show this.

Habitat:

This tree was found on Mākaha, O‘ahu

Notes:

Abies procera is a western North American fir that is native to the Cascade Range and Coast Range mountains of California and Organ, as well as to Washington in the U.S. It is a high altitude tree that typically grows at 980-4,920 ft. in altitude.
