Hi Katie, As per wikipedia The Grey Heron is native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. Whereas, The Great Blue Heron is found over most of North and Central America as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. Moreover, Grey Heron, is somewhat smaller (90–98 cm), with a pale gray neck and legs, lacking the browner colors that Great Blue Heron has there. Although I'm not an expert of American birds, I feel this is a Great Blue Heron. You can look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Blue_...
That's a fine spotting Katie. You can easily add a reference like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Heron I've taken the liberty to correct a typo in the title.
