Eyed elater

Alaus oculatus

Description:

1" long black & white click beetle.

Habitat:

Semi rural

Notes:

I was very excited to find one of these guys during a hike recently http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/107... This one was equally exciting because it was on our driveway! I also discovered why they are called "click" beetles - I was inches from this one when he suddenly made a loud click that made me jump!

Thanks Bill!
I did try to coax him into a better position but that is when I found out why they are called click beetle - it suddenly rose into the air with a loud click & scare the life out of me! :)

Thank you Neil & Satyen!
Leuba, yes I was stoked to find him! I've actually created my own private mission just so I can keep a record of everything I find in the yard!
Ashish, I often wonder why organisms evolve their specific colors & patterns - I guess it does have a lot to do with scaring or confusing predators.

What a special click beetle - all the ones I've seen are very plain. How exciting to find him in your yard !

Very cool! The click beetles I have seen here are not nearly as exquisite as this!

I guess they must Ashish, or maybe they just serve to confuse the predators like the eyes on butterflies?

Those big false eyes must be terrifying its enemies like predators.
