Fowler's Toad (tadpoles)

Anaxyrus (Bufo) fowleri

Description:

Little black tadpoles.

Habitat:

Along a riverbank in the shallow water. Very silty riverbed. I saw hundreds, probably thousands, of them along the water line. Also saw three or four clumps of toad eggs.

Notes:

I ID-ed them as Fowler's Toads based on the time of year. The tadpoles of this species are indistinguishable from those of the American Toad (at least to nonspecialists like me), but American Toads breed earlier than Fowler's Toads. I also found a Fowler's Toad adult nearby.
