Catharanthus roseus
The Madagascar periwinkle is endemic to Madagascar. Also sometimes referred to as Vinca rosea (the basionym) it is endangered in the wild. The main cause of decline is habitat destruction by slash and burn agriculture. However it is also however widely cultivated and is naturalised in subtropical and tropical areas of the world.
Growing in a a large semi-urban yard & garden in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.
This is a prolific plant easily expanding its terriitory in a garden. The variety featured here (white petals, red center) is comparatively rare at my location, perhaps less than 5% of all plants. Even rarer here is a variety with a white center and white petals. By far the most common variety I see is like the one seen in this spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/771... and as the lead photo in the ARKive reference.
