That's definitely it! Thank you so much for identifying. We were visiting the NY area from out of town and had never seen this plant before.

I'm not 100% sure on the species but it's definitely a parasitic plant that feeds on the roots of other plants. I'd suggest looking at the plants in your area from the Orobanchaceae family.
