Ironweed Weevil

Rhodonaenus tridecimpunctatus

Description:

About 10mm. Head is black. Snout curves sharply downward. Pronotum and elytra are red. Pronotum with two small lateral spots on each side and a somewhat larger medial black spot. Elytra with three black spots each, the hindmost being the largest.

Habitat:

Urban garden. This one was found in a patch of Tall Goldenrod.

Notes:

This weevil is very similar to a previous spotting of R. quinquepunctatus or Cocklebur Weevil(link below). The distinction is the spots on the elytra do not united to form a large blotch. Also, R. tridecimpunctatus is a bit larger. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/720...
