Common Whitetail

Plathemis lydia

Description:

A medium to large dragonfly with each wing bearing three brown spots. Female and immature males have a dark thorax with two pale lateral stripes and an abdomen is yellow with a very broad brown dorsal stripe running longitudinally. Both sexes have brown spots at the base, middle and tips of the wings.

You are welcome. I know the feeling. LOL There is so much variety between the sexes and even within the same kind. I'm sure of this one now, but I first I thought female amberwing (also similar). and by the way take my suggestions with a grain of salt, I am by no means an expert.

Thank you for all your species suggestion help Livan. I don't think there is anything on earth I despise more than trying to ID a dragonfly. I even bought a book, but I usually wind up throwing it against the wall.

Often confused the female Twelve-spotted skimmer has a solid white line down the side and has longer more slender wings and abdomen.
