Bird Grasshopper

Valanga sp.

Description:

Acrididae; Cyrtacanthacridinae; Valanga sp. I am very insecure in my knowledge of Orthoptera, but the information I have come across on the internet leads me to think this is Valanga sp. and might be V. nigricornis (Burmeister, 1838). I would welcome any guidance or suggestions.

Habitat:

These Valanga sp. nymphs were spotted on a Banana Plant (Musa sapientum) growing beside the road entering a rice field. Since there were so many of them, I thought that this might be an opportunity to record their development on a daily basis until they became fully developed imagos (adults). However, mother nature had other ideas. The month of August is (in the Philippines) the height of the monsoon season and this particular August was very rainy indeed. So my plan did not work out. The first 3 pictures were taken on Aug 7, the next one on Aug 9 and the last on Aug 16. When the rains eased off, i visited the spot one more time, but they were all gone.
