Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly (female)

Erythemis simplicicollis

Description:

Another one of the eight female Eastern Pondhawk dragonflies that I spotted in a meadow far from the wetland area. Two anatomical features are clearly visible in the photo: the amber colored pterostigma located near each wing tip; and the female terminal appendages located at the end of the abdomen. Also notice that the Eastern Pondhawk perches on four of six legs, with the two front legs curled around its head.

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntl...
