Common Green Darner dragonfly (male, in flight)

Anax junius

Description:

A Common Green Darner dragonfly flying over open water in the central wetland area at Huntley Meadows Park. This individual is a male, as indicated by the blue coloration of its abdomen. (The thorax is green for both male- and female Common Green Darner dragonflies.) Photo 1 (of 2) is the best dragonfly in flight photo I've ever taken! Photo 2 is a close second; although not as sharp as Photo 1, it does show the black and blue "bulls eye" in front of the dragonfly's eyes.

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntl...
