Organ Pipe Mud Dauber

Trypoxylon politum

Description:

Everyone I know calls these black hornets, but the more acceptable common name is mud dauber (though I never heard that until I did online research). Anyway, all black wasp with a characteristic pinched waist. About an inch long with a similar double-wingspan.

Habitat:

These wasps build panpipe style hives from dirt and mud they collect from the surrounding area. Mostly found in less traveled area of barns, attics, roofing, and sheds.

Notes:

This bug will sting you. And keep stinging. Unlike bees that only sting once, this one keeps going. Luckily, they aren't aggressive. Rule of thumb: if you don't mess with them, they won't mess with you.
