Diving duck Grey bill with white band, Males with prominent white sides.Red eyes, dark purple head, dark reddish brown ring on neck. Females have lighter ring on bill, brown head and dirty white sides, brown eyes.
Found in lakes and ponds in Northern American and Canada
Picture was taken at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
Thank you guys for confirmation. Knew it was the Ring neck but wanted to be sure.
I checked some internet pictures and the males also show red eyes at times. Janet, it is acceptable to add both sets of names in the relevant fields if you wish, with a note explaining which is which, or you may wish to crop the picture and make two separate spottings, its up to you.
The most common diving duck to be found on small ponds in migration, the Ring-necked Duck is more easily recognized by the bold white ring around its bill than the subtle purplish one around its neck.
Malcolm,the male has yellow eyes. The female has brownish.Red could be the effect of light.
There are two American coots in the picture too.
I agree it looks like Ring-necked but my book shows that has a yellow eye and these appear to have a red eye, but that could be an effect of lighting.
