Sphagnum fuscum

Sphagnum fuscum

Description:

S. contortum: without spiral fibrils in stem and branch cortex. Branch leaves oblong, small; branch leaf hyline cells of varying size, pores numerous; 1-3 branches per fascicle; usually brown-yellowish to green.

Habitat:

These individuals were found on a hemlock margin of the sphagnum bog. This population within the bog seems to compose a very small portion of the overall diversity of sphagnum species. Associated species consisted of ledum and western hemlock.

Notes:

Species # 6 in Shadow lake sphagnum study.

Jemma, i'm unsure on what "# and 4" but as for the hyline cells They are the large, clear, vessel shaped cells comprising the majority of the space of the leaf in photo 4. They hyline cells operate as conductive/reservoir spaces for the plant.
