Red-Eared Slider

Trachemys scripta elegans

Description:

The painted turtle has dark green, mosit skin and webbed feet to swim. It was about 6-7 inches but most varie from 4-10 inches. It has a smooth shell with a mixture of the colors brown and black. The botton of its shell is yellow. Its face, feet, and tail has yellow and red stripes. The upper jaw of the painted turtle is shaped like an upside down "v" from the yellow striped lines.

Habitat:

I found this painted turtle in a pond in Painfield IL. These types of turtles usually live in fresh waters with soft bottoms. They find their homes in shallow waters with slow moving currents such as ponds, creeks and the shores of the lakes. Their habitat is by aquatic vegetation and they eat plants and aquatic insects.

Agreed that this looks like a Red-eared Slider. Moved to the Reptiles category.
