Brown Recluse

Loxosceles reclusa

Description:

Hey look it's probably the most recognized and feared spider in Kansas even to non arachnophobes, the brown recluse, or my favorite name for them, the fiddleback. This spider is one of three in North America with medically significant venom, being necrotic in nature. Seeing as my love of all life prevented me from killing it, but because of the threat it posed, I cupped it in a deli cup and set it free in the woods near my house, among some rotting tree stumps. Hopefully its living a good life and not biting people.

Habitat:

Found throughout North America.

Notes:

The other two North American spiders with medically significant venom are the black widow and chilean recluse. There are several black widows though even in the US so saying "only three" and counting black widows as one is dangerously vague in my opinion.
