Chameleon

Chamaeleo chamaeleon

Description:

Unmistakable reptile with large head and proportionately large, bulging eyes; feet and prehensile tail used for grasping stems and branches. Moves extremely slowly but catches insects with lightning speed using extensible tongue.

Habitat:

Found in bushes and scrub. This one found on the fence of a client's garden. Local in S Iberia, Crete and Cyprus; introduced elsewhere. Here in Southern Portugal, it is regarded as an endangered species.

Notes:

Haven't seen one of these in about 4 years, so it was great to see this one. If you look at the top of its head and the end of its tail, you can see where it has been shedding its skin - some is left.
