ID of gender: Male - concaved plastron (bottom shell), red or brown eyes. In my experience, males have more colorful skin patterns. Female - brown eyed, flat plastron. Ideal environment will support up to ten per acre. These animals a e very long lived; for that reason, not good for pets - may out live pet owner. Many other reason they shouldn't be kept as pets.
