Mushroom

Description:

The tops of the mushrooms are flatter than they were a week ago. And it appears that the mushrooms are flaking off their top layer. The mushrooms are about an inch long and are a lite. Cream color

Habitat:

Front yard of Cody's house. Joliet IL

Notes:

The mushrooms are loosing their tips. Perhaps bc they're dying or the spout is purposely loosing the top to grow a new one.

Hmmm nice mushroom find! Although, unless you want better chances of having someone come up with an accurate identification for these, it's a good idea to snap shots from all angles, and yes, that means having to check under the hood and having to handle them. But even aside from that, these aged specimens could be more difficult to ID.

But to answer your curiosity on why they are starting to look like this, it's just something that occurs with age. They are indeed beginning to decay. Sometimes it's things like this that can assist in identification as long as there are also fresh mushrooms around, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case with your spotting. It's a nice spotting though, just keep in mind that more photos from different angles can definitely make the chances of finding its ID more likely. :)
