Common emperor moth caterpillar (aka cabbage tree emperor)

Bunaea alcinoe

Notes:

Quite a few of these caterpillars are romping the camp grounds, what is it and what do they eat? All of them I found were on the ground.

We also have them. They strip my cabbage tree (kiepersol) of all it's leaves. The caterpillars then leave the tree in search of another "victim". This is when you see them on the ground. Fortunately new leaves appear soon so it is not a catastrophy.

They usually feed on leaves of cabbage trees.
