I know this is a fairly simple ID, but I can't ID my birds without a field guide and I simply didn't have one on hand. So thanks much Jakubko (and everyone else who chimed in).

Great spotting! The red cap and neck, in addition to the general shape, is characterized as a sapsucker in the genus Sphyrapicus. S. nuchalis can be ruled out as a more westerly species, and S. varius can be found in your area.

Woodpecker perhaps? Is there any way of zooming in on the bird?
