wheel bug

Arilus cristatus

Notes:

This sinister looking insect sat on my window screen and ate a bright green stink bug shaped insect and a June bug over the course of two hours by sticking a stinger like appendage into the bodies of its victims. Unfortunately, I missed the hunt for the June bug while I was inside having my own meal.

Ryan, all the true bugs in the family Reduviidae are considered "assassin bugs." The Kaufman field guide lists 110 species of assassin bugs in North America. The wheel bug is certainly among the most recognizable species.
