Tragopogon dubius
large dandelion like seedhead, introduced to N. America
meadow, mixed forest, native to southern and central Europe and western Asia and found as far north and west as northern France.
I spotted this at the Allen's halfway sandpit. I thought this was a giant dandelion until I saw the foliage.

Try looking at Yellow Salsify, Tragopogon dubius,
great Dan,i would thougthed the same, a super dandelion :)
