Black-crowned night heron

Nycticorax nycticorax

Description:

This juvenile heron (which will be black as an adult) was hidden in the dry vegetation along a marsh, not far from a walking path. The bird seemed unconcerned by the numerous people that stopped to get a look at it, taking turns through a birder's viewing scope. It just looked around and then groomed at length.

Habitat:

Huntington Beach State Park
