Epiaeschna heros
Large, dark brown dragonfly with green stripes and blue eyes. Adult females can be up to 3.5 inches/9 cm long. Predominantly a southern US species, it also migrates up and down the Atlantic Coast of North America, sometimes forming large swarms. This individual is a female.
Found 500 feet from Atlantic beach. The usual habitat is swamps, marshes, wet meadows, shaded ponds, and streams.
This beautiful insect was found stunned on the ground after flying into a window. We weren't able to get a good picture with a camera, just a quick cell phone shot. Even though the picture isn't great, the insect is very impressive and I thought it worthy of PN!
