Coral Vine

Antigonon leptopus

Description:

Naturalized ornamental vine, 20-40 ft. Alternate, heart shaped leaves. Bright, rosy pink flowers, each consisting of a calyx of 5 heart shaped sepals. When sepals are spread back, they reveal 8 yellow-tipped stamens.

Habitat:

Small island in Christiansted Harbor, St Croix.

Notes:

The tubers are edible and, like its relative the buckwheat, its flowers are very attractive to bees.
